Help me write a CV/Resume guys

Posted by Gagsy - July 12th, 2010

Seriously I've always hated doing these and there is a job I'm dying to get and I need to send them a CV of course but I just can't seem to start it, and the templates online are terrible.

What do I need to put in them? I know like grades and work experience but do I like make a summary on why I should get the job and stuff?

Please help :(

I wish I could help but I suck with this stuff too.

CV are geared for academic jobs like professors, etc so a resume is best.

You'll need your contact info at the top which should stand out. Name, address, phone contact, email, etc. Depending on your job can write an Objective which tells in a sentence why you are applying for the job but typically I do not.

If you have lots of Work Experience then list it next starting from the most recent job to the past few jobs. If don't have a lot of work experience then list your Education next. If you went to college then just list it and your major. No need to list your grades unless they are totally outstanding.

After that you can list anything you feel relevant like Skill that might be pertinent to the job you're applying for Activities that you do that might be interesting to your future employer or any Awards you might have received.

At the bottom you can list some References but it's better to have them "available on request" and keep them on a separate page.

Not to mention your resume should only be one page long; no more.

To quote my shitty CV,

"I arranged and organised my own work experience. My weeks work experience in June 2006 was with the Museum in Transit. This is a group who visit various primary and infant schools in Devon and organise history themed activity days for the children. The helped me to develop speaking skills and working with children, which I enjoyed immensely.

My last job was as a temporary store assistant at TK Maxx Plymouth. My former working pattern was four hours on both Saturday and Sunday. My skills include working in the fitting rooms, retrieval, and assisting with stock maintenance. I have till experience through working the registers. I have developed my people skills - interacting with people, problem solving and helping and assisting customers. I am punctual, reliable and have been flexible in my approach doing whatever job is required of me, either before the store re-opened or once it had opened. I can work independently or as part of a team. I have worked additional hours, some at short notice. Along with all other temporary staff my employment ended on Saturday 27th December 2008

Additionally, I have been a member of the Plympton Beaver, Cub and Scouts. At Scouts I was a Patrol Leader, where I helped develop, organise and assist with various scouts activities. At the Sixth Form I have been engaged in the debating society, which I feel has expanded my ability to communicate effectively and precisely."

I now work at a cafe and have done a gap year but I haven't bothered to add that stuff yet, so perhaps I'm not a good example.
